Officials say gunmen have killed at least 25 people at a student housing area in northeastern Nigeria.
The attack took place late Monday at Federal Polytechnic College in the town of Mubi.
Police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim, in the city of Bauchi, tells VOA that the dead include 19 Polytechnic students.
The radical Islamist group known as Boko Haram has carried out many deadly shootings and bombings in Nigeria's northeast. But authorities say the motive behind the Mubi attack is not known.
A spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaib, says the incident may have been fueled by “campus politics” following a student election.
Shuaib says people injured in the attack have been taken to local hospitals, and that a state of “normalcy” had been restored.
