Israeli police have shot dead a U.S. man after he opened fire at a hotel in the Red Sea resort city of Eilat killing one person.

Officials say the man, an American in his 20s, stole a gun from a security guard and shot a hotel worker who died at the scene.

Police say the man then barricaded himself in the hotel kitchen and opened fire during negotiations with police. He was then shot dead by officers.

Police have not given a motive for the attack, but reports say the shooter once worked at the hotel and knew the victim.
