Heavy rains have caused flooding in Russia's southern region of Dagestan, leaving seven people dead.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said Wednesday the flooding occurred in the Caspian Sea coastal city of Derbent, affecting hundreds of homes. It said more than 1,000 people were affected, including 280 children.

A flash flood in August killed 171 people in the Caucasus town of Krymsk. Some local officials were later fired after citizens complained that they were not adequately warned about the danger of flooding.
