Taiwanese officials say a fire has killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a hospital housing mainly bedridden patients in southern Taiwan.

Hospital officials say the fire broke out in the second floor nursing facility of the Hsinying Hospital in Tainan city early Tuesday.

Officials say the injured, many of whom were too frail to run for their lives, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
