Swedish police say a security guard was killed at the Swedish prime minister's residence in what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said Friday that the prime minister was not at home at the time.

Police say the man worked as a security guard at the Sagerska Palace residence of the prime minister in downtown Stockholm. Officials say they are investigating the death as a suicide or work-related accident.

A police spokeswoman says there is nothing to suggest a crime was committed.

The protection of Sweden's top politicians was stepped up after the 1986 murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme and the fatal stabbing of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh in 2003.
