A New York judge says a settlement has been reached in the lawsuit filed against former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn by a hotel maid who accused him of sexual assault.

The judge announced the deal Monday, at a hearing on settlement negotiations between the sides.

Strauss-Kahn, a French economist and politician, was arrested in May 2011 after the hotel maid, Nafissatou Diallo, accused him of assaulting her when she went to clean his room at a luxury New York hotel. Prosecutors later dropped the criminal charges against Strauss-Kahn, saying Diallo would not be a credible witness.

The scandal forced Strauss-Kahn to resign his IMF post and derailed his potential candidacy for the French presidency. He also faces charges in France that he was involved in arranging parties between wealthy men and prostitutes. A court will rule on the case later this month.
