News reports from the northeastern U.S. state of Connecticut say at least 20 people, including children, were killed in a shooting at an elementary school.

The reports say a suspected gunman was among the dead at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Police and other emergency vehicles are at the scene. Images showed children being rushed out of the school.

The White House says President Barack Obama has been informed of the shooting and will receive briefings throughout the day.
