Officials in eastern Afghanistan say an explosion has killed 10 girls, ranging in age from 9 to 13 years. Two girls were wounded in the blast.
Authorities say the girls were collecting firewood Monday morning in Nangarhar province when the device exploded.
Officials believe the blast came from an old landmine, many of which are still hidden in fields and rural areas after decades of conflict.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan Monday, witnesses say an explosion was heard in Kabul.
The cause and the location of the blast in the capital were not immediately clear.
