Spanish police say they have arrested three suspected computer hackers who belong to a group of international activists thought to be responsible for attacks on Japanese electronics giant Sony and several governments.
Authorities said Friday police arrested the suspects in Barcelona, the Valencia region and the southern city of Almeria. They said one of the suspects had a computer server in his home that was used in coordinated attacks on Spanish banks, the Italian energy company Enel and the governments of Algeria, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Iran, Libya and New Zealand.
The three are said to be members of the loosely affiliated group Anonymous, which has claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card databases and government websites.
In April, Sony shut down its worldwide PlayStation Network and Qriocity streaming music service after what the company described as an “external intrusion” by Anonymous. Top Sony executives apologized for the security breach that affected millions of users.
Sony had no immediate comment on the arrests.
