India: Terrorism to Dominate Talks with Pakistan

India says two days of talks between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan in Islamabad later this week will likely focus on terrorism issues.

In a statement Monday, Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna said the two countries must deal with terrorism “firmly and transparently” for the common good of both nations. He also stressed the need to overcome what he called a “trust deficit” between the two nuclear armed neighbors.

For India, the “trust deficit” is closely linked to the Mumbai siege blamed on Pakistan-based Islamic militants, in which 166 people were killed. After the attack, India put the peace process on hold, but agreed to resume it earlier this year.

Pakistani officials have suggested that India should move beyond the Mumbai attacks and focus on other issues, such as peace, security, and the disputed Kashmir region. But New Delhi insists it will bring up the siege.

Krishna cautioned not to expect quick results from the meeting Thursday and Friday. Higher-ranking talks between foreign ministers are due next month.
