Residents of the Italian port city of Naples have vented their frustration with the city's perpetual trash disposal problem by dumping uncollected refuse in central streets.

Angry citizens used tarps to drag rubbish off side roads and alleys and dump it in main streets overnight.

Huge piles of garbage blocked the traffic in Naples Tuesday and the summer heat created a powerful stench.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported that some 2,400 tons of trash were dumped in a central square (of Santa Caterina da Siena), near the Spanish Quarter.

Naples has been plagued by a recurring rubbish collection crisis, caused by years of mismanagement, corruption and organized crime.
