Egypt's Health Ministry says it has no “scientific document” confirming Hosni Mubarak has cancer as the ousted president's lawyer said last week.

The ministry statement was published in Egyptian newspapers Sunday.

The former president's lawyer has said Mr. Mubarak has stomach cancer with growing tumors.

One newspaper, Al-Masry al-Youm, reports a German medical team is scheduled to examine the ex-leader Sunday.

The newspaper says the team will include the German surgeon who operated on Mr. Mubarak last year to remove his gallbladder and part of his pancreas, which were cancerous.

The 83-year-old ex-president has been detained in a hospital in a Red Sea resort since suffering heart problems during questioning on April 13.

Mr. Mubarak faces trial in August on charges of fraud and ordering the killing of anti-government protesters. He resigned in February amid massive protests against him and his government.

Mr. Mubarak and his family face multiple investigations. The ex-leader and his two sons are charged with crimes stemming back decades.

A conviction could carry the death penalty, and activists suspect he may be using health problems to sway public opinion and win possible amnesty.

The former president's lawyer says his client has skipped medical checkups that should have taken place every four months.
