Two people were killed and at least 22 others injured late Monday when thousands of angry demonstrators protesting against power outages clashed with police in the northeastern Pakistani city of Mianwali.

Local authorities say the incident occurred when some of the demonstrators pelted police with stones and attacked government buildings, shops and vehicles. Police responded with batons and tear gas but opened fire after they failed to stop the mob from heading toward the Chashma nuclear power plant.

Thousands of people also staged a sit-in protest and chanted anti-government slogans.

Pakistan is facing an acute power crisis and people stage violent protests each summer to protest daily power shortages.
