Officials in Afghanistan say an Azerbaijani cargo plane with nine crew members on board has crashed into a mountain in eastern Afghanistan.

The crash happened late Tuesday in the Sayagred area of Parwan province, north of the capital, Kabul, as the plane was traveling to Bagram air base.

Local sources say the bodies of eight people have been discovered, but there has been no official confirmation.

Officials say there was no report of insurgent activity in the area, but a Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility saying his forces had shot down the aircraft. However, the group is known to regularly exaggerate its claims.

Azerbaijani sources say the plane belonged to Silk Way Airlines. A NATO spokesman said earlier the plane was not a coalition aircraft.

In October, a civilian cargo plane carrying supplies for NATO forces crashed into a mountain near Kabul, killing all eight people on board.
