Four police officers in Jordan have been arrested in connection to a protest crackdown that left journalists and civilians injured.

The state-run Petra news agency announced the arrests on Saturday, a day after police with batons moved in on anti-government demonstrators in Amman. Witnesses said at least 10 people were wounded during the confrontation.

The news agency quoted a security official as saying the results of an probe into the incident would be announced within 72 hours.

Jordanian journalists have sharply criticized the attack. They released an article in the Al-Arab Al-Yawm independent newspaper on Saturday, calling the crackdown “barbaric.” They urged the government to punish those responsible.

The unrest erupted after hundreds of Jordanians took to the streets after Friday prayers and urged the government to meet their demands for change.

In June, Jordan's King Abdullah announced a series of concessions, in an apparent bid to meet protesters' demands. He said he would pursue reforms that would allow the formation of future governments that were based on an elected parliamentary majority.
