Major Asian stock markets closed mixed Tuesday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost nearly one percent to finish at 9,890.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained nearly one-half of one percent to finish the day's trading at 21,902.

Share prices were higher in Bangkok, Manila, Singapore and Wellington, but lower in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Sydney, Taipei and Shanghai.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 78.93 yen, a loss of just over one-tenth of a yen from Monday.

Gold is trading at $1,604.43 an ounce.
