More than 150 passengers have escaped serious injury when a plane they were on crashed on landing and broke in two in Guyana.
Officials say the Caribbean Airlines jet crashed landed early Saturday in the rain at Guyana's Cheddi Jagan International Airport. They said the Boeing 737 aircraft skidded past the end of the runway and came to rest in a dark field.
President Bharrat Jagdeo told the Associated Press the broken plane narrowly avoided sliding down into a 60-meter deep ravine.
Officials say rescue efforts were hurt by rain and darkness but everyone on board survived. They said some passengers were still getting treatment on the scene while several had to be taken to a nearby hospital. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Caribbean Airlines said Saturday there were 157 passengers and six crew members on the flight from Port of Spain, Trinidad to Guyana when it crashed. The airline also said it has sent teams to the airport to help and that it is staying in contact with Guyanan authorities.
Media reports said the flight originated in New York.
