An Australian cardiologist says that Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd is doing well after heart surgery Monday that replaced a failing heart valve with one from a cow.

Dr. Malcolm Davison told reporters in Rudd's hometown of Brisbane that the 53-year-old former prime minister was expected to recover in about eight weeks.

Rudd had similar surgery in 1993 to deal with heart problems caused by rheumatic fever when he was a child.
