Israeli and Palestinian sources say Israeli airstrikes killed six Palestinians and wounded dozens more Wednesday, while Palestinian militants fired at least 10 rockets into Israel, wounding an infant.
In Beit Lahya in the northern Gaza Strip late Wednesday, Israeli jets killed two Palestinians and wounded 20 others, while a third man died of injuries received earlier in the day.
In the southern Gaza Strip, an air strike on a smuggling tunnel and a weapons manufacturing site killed another three Palestinians.
The Israeli military and Palestinian militants have carried out back-and-forth attacks since last Thursday, when militants crossed into southern Israel and attacked Israeli buses, cars and security personnel who rushed to the scene.
Eight Israelis were killed. Israeli troops fired back — killing at least five assailants in a battle along the Israeli border with Egypt's Sinai peninsula. Five Egyptian officers were also killed during the fighting.
Egypt's military-led government threatened to withdraw its ambassador to Israel in protest at the killings, blaming them on Israeli troops whom it said violated the two neighbors' 1979 peace treaty.
