Japanese markets closed slightly higher Thursday, while the U.S. dollar is trading higher against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained more than one-quarter of one percent to finish at 8,793.

The dollar was selling at 77.35 yen, a gain of a fraction of a yen from Wednesday.

The Taipei market ended at 7,548, a gain of just over one-quarter of one percent .
