Singapore says it is holding three suspected Islamist militants under the city-state's tough security provisions, including one described as having undergone terrorist training with al-Qaida in Afghanistan.

A statement Monday by the Ministry of Home Affairs said the suspects were arrested in other jurisdictions in recent months and later jailed in Singapore under provisions of the Internal Security Act. Those statutes allow for indefinite detentions without trial.

The statement said the al-Qaida-linked suspect and a colleague in detention belonged to the Indonesia-based regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah. The third detainee is thought to have ties to the Philippine terrorist group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF.
