A New York Republican could win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday, in a congressional district that has not elected a Republican in decades.
Republican Bob Turner, a retired media executive, is running against Democratic state assemblyman David Weprin for the seat left empty by Anthony Weiner, who resigned earlier this year in a scandal.
Despite having more funding and the support of former U.S. president Bill Clinton, a recent poll showed Weprin with 44 percent of voter support. Turner had 50 percent.
The Siena Research Institute polled 886 likely voters in New York's 9th congressional district last week.
In June, Representative Weiner resigned after posting a lewd photograph of himself on his public Twitter account.
A congressional district in the state of Nevada is also holding a special election Tuesday. The Republican candidate, Mark Amodei, is expected to win easily .
Republicans control the U.S. House of Representatives, while Democrats have the majority in the Senate.
