US Stocks Advance in Midday Trading Tuesday

U.S. stock indexes moved up in midday trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average of 30 key stocks is ahead nine-tenths of one percent, while the broader S&P 500 is up one percent. The technology-laden NASDAQ is ahead by eight-tenths of a percent.

European stock prices closed sharply higher.

London's Financial Times index ended up 2 percent to close at 5,364. The CAC-40 in Paris advanced 1.5 percent to close at 2,984. The DAX index in Frankfurt finished up 2.9 percent at 5,572.

Earlier, in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index lost 1.6 percent to finish at 8,721.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained one-half of one percent to finish the day's trading at 19,015.

Gold is trading up $27.22 at $1,806.07 an ounce.

The dollar is trading lower against both the yen and euro.
