The U.S. Senate has voted against President Barack Obama's jobs package for the second time in less than two weeks.

The 50-to-50 Senate vote late Thursday crushed a $35-billion package to help cash-strapped states employ teachers, police, and emergency responders. The proposal would have increased taxes on millionaires.

All 47 Senate Republicans, joined by two of President Obama's fellow Democrats and one independent, stopped the measure, a key piece of the president's $477 billion jobs package.

Sixty votes are needed under Senate rule to advance action on the bill.

Last week, following the Senate's rejection of the larger jobs package, the Democrats said they would resurrect the bill for voting, one measure at a time.
