Asian stock markets closed higher Monday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.9 percent to close at 8,844.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 4.14 percent to end at 18,772.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Manila. Markets also closed higher in Shanghai, Seoul, Sydney, Singapore and Mumbai. Markets in Bangkok and Wellington were closed for national holidays .

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 76.18 yen, down a tenth of a yen from late Friday.

Gold was trading at $1,653.08 an ounce.
