The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling on the United States to lift its embargo of Cuba.

It was the general assembly's 20th condemnation of the embargo.

The annual resolution was approved Tuesday with 186 members voting in favor of the measure, 3 abstaining and 2 against — the U.S. and Israel.

During a speech preceding the vote, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said the embargo has cost Cuba hundreds of billions of dollars in economic development.

The United States officially imposed the trade and economic embargo on Cuba after Fidel Castro took power and defeated a CIA-backed assault on the Bay of Pigs in 1961.

The General Assembly has approved a measure condemning it every year since the first vote in 1992.

The first vote against the embargo was 59-3, with 71 abstentions.
