Michael Jackson's doctor has received the maximum sentence of four years in prison for the death of the pop superstar.

Doctor Conrad Murray learned of the punishment Tuesday. A Los Angeles jury found Murray guilty of involuntary manslaughter following a six-week trial that ended in early November.

The judge said Jackson died not because of an isolated incident or accident, but because of a series of decisions Murray made that jeopardized Jackson and violated his obligations to the singer. He said Murray was involved in “horrible medicine” that included a sophisticated scheme to get the powerful drug propofol for Jackson.

The judge said Murray violated the trust and confidence of Jackson, and took part in a recurring pattern of deceit and lies.

Prosecutors said Murray gave Jackson the drug propofol that is not approved as a sleep aid, and then abandoned the entertainer while he attended to personal matters. They also said the doctor put off calling for emergency help after finding Jackson unresponsive. They said Jackson put his trust in Murray and paid for it with his life.

Jackson died in his Los Angeles bedroom in June 2009. He was in rehearsal for a planned series of European concerts at the time.

Murray's lawyers argued Jackson gave himself the fatal dosage without the doctor's knowledge. They said there is no proof the doctor did anything wrong. Murray did not take the stand in his own defense.

Apart from the criminal trial, Jackson's father has filed a wrongful death suit, accusing Murray of lying to the doctors and paramedics who tried to save the singer's life.
