Police in Indian-administered Kashmir broke up a religious procession by Shi'ite Muslims who defied a strict curfew in the main city, Srinagar.

Police in riot gear used tear gas and water cannons to disperse marchers marking the Muslim holy month of Muharram. Officials say dozens of people were detained for defying the ban, and several people were injured in the clashes.

Authorities in Indian Kashmir have banned large public gatherings since 1989 when armed separatists began their insurgency against Indian rule.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Shi'ites around the world hold mourning processions during the month, which includes the anniversary of the death of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad in battle at Karbala more than 13 centuries ago.
