Sudan and South Sudan have agreed to resume talks aimed at settling disputes that triggered cross-border clashes last month.

Sources with both countries and the African Union told VOA Thursday that the talks will resume May 29 in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.

The AU-mediated talks in Addis Ababa broke down last month, after fighting that included the south's occupation of a disputed oil town, Heglig, and alleged Sudanese airstrikes on southern territory.

The sides have been at odds over borders, oil, and citizenship questions since South Sudan split from the north and became independent last July.

The fighting has raised fears of an all-out war between the two Sudans.

Before their split, northern and southern Sudan fought a 21-year civil war that ended in 2005.
