Russian officials say at least 78 people have been killed and thousands have been affected by floods after torrential rains in the south of the country.

Authorities said Saturday that storms, floods and a landslide have affected the southern Krasnodarsky Krai region. Streets are flooded after two days of rain; some cars disappeared in the floods or were overturned by flooding.

Public transportation in the region is stalled.

Reuters news agency reports that Novorossiisk, Russia's largest Black Sea port, halted crude oil shipments on Saturday because of the storm.

A government spokesman says police increased their presence in order to prevent looting.
