Officials say a U.S. Air Force fighter jet crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Japan late Sunday morning, but the pilot managed to eject safely.

American and Japanese officials say the Lockheed-Martin F-16 crashed soon after taking off from Misawa Air Base in northern Aomori Prefecture late Sunday morning.

Japan's coast guard said the single pilot managed to escape and a rescue mission is under way to retrieve him.
