The world's fastest man rested while his Jamaican teammates stayed on course for another gold medal.
Jamaica easily advanced Friday in the men's 4×100 relay at the London Olympics, setting up a scenario where Usain Bolt could achieve an unprecedented Olympic “triple-double.”
A win in the 4×100 would follow his victories in the 100- and 200-meter sprints. He won all three races at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Bolt and his teammates will face a tough U.S. squad anchored by 100-meter bronze medalist Justin Gatlin.
Also on the track Friday, Ethiopian Meseret Defar won the gold medal in the women's 5,000-meter race, denying teammate Tirunesh Dibaba a chance for an Olympic “double-double.”
In the women's 4×100 relay, the U.S. won the gold, Jamaica the silver, and Ukraine the bronze.
Elsewhere, Russia earned a gold medal in synchronized swimming. Colombia's Mariana Pajon won a gold in women's BMX competition, and Latvia's Maris Strombergs captured a gold in men's BMX.
In men's wrestling, Russia's Dzhamal Otarsultanov won a gold in 55-kilogram freestyle, and American Jordan Ernest Burroughs did likewise in 74-kilogram.
On the basketball court, Spain beat Russia, 67-59, and will play the winner of the U.S.-Argentina game for the gold medal on Sunday. The star-studded U.S. squad is seeking its second straight Olympic title.
In the medal count, the U.S. and China remain far ahead, with Russia in third place and Britain in fourth. The U.S. and China are about even in gold medals.
