A court in India has convicted 32 people, including a former state government minister, in connection with deadly religious riots that swept through the western state of Gujarat in 2002.
The court on Wednesday found Maya Kodnani, a former minister in Gujarat, guilty for their role in attacks against Muslims during the riots. It also acquitted 29 others.
The violence erupted after a train fire, blamed on Muslims, killed 60 Hindu pilgrims. Hindu mobs then rampaged through towns and villages in Gujarat, targeting Muslim homes and neighborhoods. About 1,000 Muslims died in the violence.
