A French court has banned the French magazine Closer from publishing any further topless photographs of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge and ordered it to hand over all digital copies of the images.

The court says the magazine faces a fine of $13,000 for every day it delays handing over the images.

Last week, the magazine published revealing shots of Britain's Prince William and his wife, Kate, on vacation at a private villa in southern France. They apparently were not aware they were being photographed.

William and Kate, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have also filed a criminal complaint aimed at prosecution of the magazine editor and the photographer who took the pictures.

But Tuesday's decision will not affect other media outlets who publish the pictures. British media have agreed not to use the images, but the pictures have been reprinted by an Irish tabloid and an Italian gossip magazine.

William's mother, Princess Diana, was killed 15 years ago in a high-speed car chase in Paris while fleeing celebrity photographers.
