The 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, honoring the best in television, was held in Los Angeles Sunday.
Showtime's Homeland won the top drama series prize. The show is a psychological thriller about an al-Qaida-influenced U.S. soldier who returns home to America to carry out a terrorism attack.
Homeland's Damian Lewis, who plays the U.S. soldier, and Claire Danes, who plays the bipolar CIA agent who suspects the soldier has been turned by al-Qaida, won the Emmys for best actor and best actress in a drama series.
Homeland also won a best writing award.
Modern Family, ABC's comedy series about the chaotic lives of three related couples and their children, won the best comedy prize.
Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen won the awards for best supporting actor and actress in a comedic series.
Actress Julianne Moore won for best actress in a miniseries or movie for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in HBO's Game Change. Moore said she felt “validated” because Palin had given her a “big thumbs down” for her performance of Palin as John McCain's vice presidential running mate in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.
The CBS show The Amazing Race won best reality competition program for the ninth time, while ABC's Dancing with the Stars' host Tom Bergeron waltzed away with best host prize of a reality competition program.
Veteran actress Maggie Smith won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a series for Downton Abbey on PBS.
