Britain's Ministry of Defense says five Royal Marines are facing murder charges as part of an investigation into a 2011 incident with an insurgent in Afghanistan.

Authorities arrested a total of nine marines over the incident, which officials say did not involve any civilians. Those charged are expected to be tried in a military court.

This is believed to be the first time British troops have been arrested and charged with murder during the Afghan war.

Media reports say the arrests came after authorities found video footage on the laptop of a British serviceman who had been arrested in Britain on an unrelated charge after serving in Afghanistan.

Defense Secretary Philip Hammond would not comment on the specifics of the case Sunday. However, he insisted that his ministry is determined that rules of engagement be followed.
