European stock markets were sharply lower in midday trading Friday. London’s Financial Times 100 index was down 1.80 percent , to 5,103. The CAC-40 in Paris fell 2.22 percent , to 2,960. Tokyo Stocks Steady, Dollar Up

Japanese share prices were steady Friday, while the dollar inched up against the yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index was unchanged , to close at 8,700. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.88 yen, up slightly from late Thursday. Gold was trading at $1,632.82 an ounce.

Japan’s Nikkei Index Closes in Positive Territory

Japanese markets closed higher Thursday, while the U.S. dollar is trading lower against the Japanese yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index rose one percent to finish at 8,701. The dollar was selling at 76.49 yen, a loss of one-tenth of a yen from Wednesday. Gold is trading at $1,627.10 an ounce.
