European stock markets were lower in midday trading Monday. London’s Financial Times 100 index was down more than 2 percent , to 5,257. The CAC-40 in Paris dropped 2.7 percent , to 2,950. Tokyo Markets Closed, Dollar Up

Japanese markets were closed Monday for a national holiday , while the dollar rose against the yen. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.84 yen, up slightly from late Friday. Gold was trading at $1,816.82 an ounce.

Japanese markets were closed Monday for a national holiday , while the dollar rose against the yen. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.93 yen, up a tenth of a yen from late Friday. The Taipei market fell 1.27 percent , to close at 7,481.

Japanese markets closed higher Friday, while the U.S. dollar is slightly higher against the Japanese yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index rose two and one-quarter percent to finish at 8,864. The dollar was selling at 76.71 yen, a gain of a fraction of a yen from Thursday. Gold is trading at $1,779.44 an ounce.
