We are saddened by the cancellation of music festivities this year. I have attended Festival on the Niger 4 times beginning in 2006 and lastly in 2012 and, from a tourist/spectator prospective, enjoyed all 4 tremendously. February 2014 will be the 10th anniversary of the Festival and we really hope that conditions will allow the Festival to take place and that the shortcomings specified by Ms Maxwell and Ms Segala will have been resolved.
My thoughts and concerns are with the Malian people. Our friends and associates in all parts of Mali are struggling now.

This is a great catastrophe, especially in the face of the massive bravery and creativity shown by the festival’s organizers since Mali’s troubles began despite losing everything they had built for years. I have been following the ‘alternative’ arrangements and can only applaud them heartily from so far away in Australia.
The only positive I can see coming out of the horrible things the Malians are enduring is that a spotlight on them can help show the world what a special and beautiful culture Mali is — and to be inspired to pull out all the stops to help them restore balance and also to continue to build their society and culture.
One day I will be honored to attend the festival when it is thriving again. By then I will be coming from only a short distance, from Guinea.
