Five Tech Giants Team Up to Pacify AI Fears
The rapidly-evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised concern either because of fears that robots will take over jobs or because of uncertainty about ethics and best practices, among other issues. The new nonprofit alliance includes Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM, in addition to AI research groups. The goal is to educate the public about artificial intelligence as it continues to pervade everyday life and to facilitate collaboration on best practices with experts from other fields, such as philosophers and ethicists.
How Neuromorphic ‘Brain Chips’ Will Begin the Next Era in Computing
IBM’s neuromorphic chips, called TrueNorth, imitate the structure of the human brain in that they have a million computer neurons working in parallel across 256 million inter-neuron connections. Existing chips use billions of transistors all in a line to process data, but the new generation of processors allows for faster and more efficient computing.
A Chinese Company Is Accused of Undermining Internet Security
Researchers at Mozilla, the maker of the popular Firefox internet browser, say Chinese firm WoSign has been issuing weak security certificates to people who shouldn’t have them and backdating them to get around security protocols. The web certificates in question are those that make a lock appear next to a website address, implying that the site is secure for sensitive data traffic.
