Mexico's military says federal police have shot at a U.S. Embassy vehicle carrying two U.S. government employees south of Mexico City. The Americans were wounded.

Mexican officials say police were pursuing suspected criminals, and mistook the vehicle carrying the Americans. The embassy car, with diplomatic plates, tried to get away.

Shots were fired at the car carrying the Americans by Mexican police pursuing it in four vehicles.

The two Americans were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

The U.S. Embassy said they were in stable condition but did not release the names of the victims.
