European Stocks Lower in Midday Trading

European stock prices are lower in midday trading Thursday.

London's Financial Times index is down one and one-quarter percent. The CAC-40 in Paris is down over one percent, and trading on the DAX index in Frankfurt is down over three-quarters of one percent.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is down three points, indicating a lower opening.

Tokyo's Nikkei index plunged nearly one and three-quarters percent to finish at 9,411.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost one and three-quarters percent to finish the day's trading at 21,953.

Gold is trading at $1,391.50 an ounce.

The dollar is mixed in trading against other major currencies.
