Pakistani police say at least eight armed men have kidnapped a U.S. citizen from his residence in the eastern city of Lahore.

Pakistani police say the attackers overpowered guards and took the American early Saturday. They say the kidnapped man is in his 60s and works for a private company.

U.S. embassy officials have confirmed the kidnapped foreigner is an American national.

No one has claimed responsibility for the abduction.

Kidnappings for ransom are fairly common in Pakistan, although foreigners are not usually targets. Pakistani Taliban militants say they kidnapped a Swiss couple earlier this year in the southwest of the country.

Anti-U.S. sentiments run high in Pakistan. Tensions increased between Islamabad and Washington after the May 2 killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in a U.S. raid in Pakistan.
