Asian markets closed mostly lower Tuesday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained two-tenths of one percent to close at 9,107.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost a quarter of one percent to end at 20,212.

Elsewhere, markets were higher in Manila, Wellington and Seoul. The markets in Jakarta, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Mumbai, Taipei, Shanghai and Sydney closed lower.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.77 yen, down a fraction from late Monday.

Gold was trading at $1,773.82 an ounce.
