At least one person was killed and two others were left missing in Japan Tuesday as Typhoon Roke brought heavy rain and wind to the central and western parts of the country.
A man in Nagoya city on Honshu island fell to his death from the roof of a building.
Authorities advised about 1 million people to evacuate Nagoya city before the storm, warning that nearby rivers might burst their banks and flood the area. There also are worries of massive mudslides.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the typhoon is threatening to strike Japan's largest island of Honshu Wednesday. It said Roke was carrying maximum winds of 144 kilometers per hour.
Western Japan is still recovering from the aftermath of Typhoon Talas, which left at least 80 people dead or missing earlier this month. The storm swept away roads and downed telephone and power lines, leaving more than 4,000 people isolated.
