Asian stock markets closed higher Monday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.5 percent to close at 8,880.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 2 percent to end at 18,874.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Wellington and Manila. Markets also closed up in Shanghai, Seoul, Sydney, Singapore and Bangkok. Mumbai stocks slipped.

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 77.36 yen, up more than one-tenth of a yen from late Friday.

Gold was trading at $1,687.48 an ounce.
