Japanese share prices ended higher Monday, while the dollar gained against the yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.5 percent to close at 8,880.

The dollar was selling at 77.40 yen in currency trading, up two-tenths of a yen from late Friday.

Gold was trading at $1,694.19 an ounce.
