Authorities in Burma say hundreds of people are dead or missing following flash flooding in a tropical storm near the border with Bangladesh.
The Myanmar Times newspaper quotes officials in the Magwe Division town of Pakoku as saying the storm, which struck Sunday, claimed more than 200 lives. Residents were still searching for bodies Wednesday, and the newspaper said the death toll would likely exceed 300.
United Nations' officials said the storm dumped up to 150 millimeters of rain on the Magwe region and also triggered flooding in the Mandalay and Sagaing areas.
The U.N.. office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said some 26,000 people in Magwe were affected by the floods, which washed away more than 2,100 homes.
