Militants ambushed Pakistani troops in the country's northwest Friday, sparking clashes that killed one soldier and more than 20 insurgents.

Local officials say militants set off a roadside bomb in the Orakzai tribal region, wounding at least 20 troops.

Security forces repelled the attack, sparking a gunbattle.

The region is a stronghold of Pakistan Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.
