Gunmen have killed an American engineer and two Afghans in an area north of Kabul.

Provincial administration spokeswoman Roshan Khalid told VOA on Tuesday the attack occurred in Parwan province. Officials say the three were traveling from central Bamiyan province to the capital when assailants opened fire on their vehicle.

Khalid said no one has been arrested. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

It was not immediately clear if the American was the intended targeted of the attack. However, the incident took place two days after a man dressed in an Afghan police uniform killed two Americans and a Briton at a police training center in the western province of Herat. The three were contractors working for NATO as trainers.

Also Tuesday, officials say a bomb went off in Ghor province, killing at least six children who were grazing animals. Local officials blamed the Taliban.

In another development, Afghan security officials say they have foiled an insurgent attack on a major international hotel in Kabul.

Officials announced the alleged plot on Tuesday, but did not name the hotel.
